Conceptual designs of such magnets with 90 mm aperture have been developed and studied. This paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of further increasing the aperture of Nb3Sn low-beta quadrupoles , and shows that an aperture up to 110 mm is possible.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL 10 T Nb 3 Sn DIPOLE MAGNET FOR THE CERN

An experimental 1 meter long twin aperture dipole magnet is developed using a high current density Nb3Sn conductor in order to attain a magnetic field well beyond 10 T at 4.2 K. The emphasis in this Nb3Sn project is on the highest possible field within the known LHC twin aperture configuration. A design target of 11.5 tesla was chosen, a value which can be achieved with the presently available ...

Mitigating Radiation Loads in Nb3Sn Quadrupoles for LHC Upgrades

Challenging beam-induced energy deposition issues are addressed for the next generation of the LHC high-luminosity interaction regions based on Nb3Sn quadrupoles. Detailed MARS15 Monte Carlo energy deposition calculations are performed for various coil diameters, thicknesses and materials of the inner absorber at a field gradient of 200 T/m. It is shown that using the inner absorber made of tun...

Coil End Optimization of the Nb3Sn Quadrupole for the High Luminosity LHC

As part of the Large Hadron Collider Luminosity upgrade (HiLumi-LHC) program, the US LARP collaboration and CERN are working together to design and build a 150 mm aperture quadrupole magnet that aims at providing a nominal gradient of 140 T/m. The resulting conductor peak field of more than 12 T requires the use of Nb3Sn superconducting coils. In this paper the coil design for the quadrupole sh...

OPTICS IMPLICATIONS OF IMPLEMENTING Nb3Sn MAGNETS IN THE LHC PHASE I UPGRADE*

CERN has encouraged the US-LARP collaboration to participate in Phase I of the LHC luminosity upgrade by analyzing the benefits gained by using Nb3Sn technology to replace the functionality of select NbTi magnets that CERN is committed to construct. Early studies have shown that the much higher gradients (shorter magnetic lengths) and temperature margins (quench stability) of Nb3Sn magnets comp...

Nb Sn Accelerator Magnet Technology R & D at Fermilab

INTRODUCTION Nb3Sn accelerator magnets allow magnet operation above 10 T and drastically increase the coil temperature margin relative to NbTi magnets. Magnets with such parameters are needed for the LHC IR upgrade, cr mponents of ILC, MSR and MC magnet systems. Fermilab is developing Nb3Sn accelerator magnets using shell-type dipole coils and the wind-and-react method. The R&D program includes...
